Legacy PHP application modernized in place

A fifteen-year-old PHP system moved onto Laravel piece by piece while staff kept using it every day.

This is a representative example of a project type we take on — a typical situation, approach and scope — not a description of a specific client engagement. Timelines are indicative; yours will depend on the details.

The situation

The application predates modern PHP: no framework, SQL assembled from strings, logic in the templates. It earns money daily, so switching it off for a rewrite isn't an option.

How we approach it

  • Fix injection and authentication flaws immediately, before any restructuring.
  • Run Laravel alongside the old code and route pages to it one at a time.
  • Replace the riskiest and most-changed areas first.
  • Upgrade the PHP version in steps, with automated checks at each one.

What gets delivered

  • Security fixes
  • Incremental migration to Laravel
  • Supported PHP version
  • Developer documentation
